Switching Careers During a PANDEMIC
If you are fortunate to have a job during this pandemic, you may be considering a career change for a variety of reasons. This may lead to finding a career that is a better fit.
Assess your personal strengths through introspection and asking others as how they see you. There is a risk factor but with risk goes reward like investing in stocks.
Due to COVID-19, interviewing in person is no longer safe or practical. Reliance on technology is crucial. Make appropriate LinkedIn connections and email business contacts. Using technology is an art and a science. It must present you as being genuine and in your best light. Utilize video meetings and voice mail for informational interviews. Above all, send a thank you note expressing gratitude and a genuine interest for the potential job offering and the interviewer’s time.
Rebrand yourself through social media to connect with industry leaders and market yourself to a new audience. Show you are seriously invested in your new target industry and you will come across as being more credible. Target the right people in your desired industry to find out what skills are most valuable.
Improve your skill set by knowing what skill transfers into a new job. Narrow your qualifications with a laser like focus. Emphasize relevant parts of your experience.
Reality exists. This may mean taking on lower pay or an internship to gain more relevant experience. It can be hard reporting to a much younger supervisor but with a dash of humility you can soak up all the knowledge you can for long term career benefit.
Know that unanticipated roadblocks can and will arise. Every roadblock is an opportunity to soak up new knowledge. This may mean moving to a new state or a new city. Career transition will result from openness and quickness at snapping up new experiences. Flexibility and creativity are crucial when switching careers.
Switching careers is challenging, but in unusual times, success awaits those who can adapt quickly, think creatively, and possess the wherewithal to see the process through.
