Your TRANSFERRABLE SKILLS are those essential skills that dominate your core skills in prior employment. A person in a supervisory capacity would need to know the technical aspects of their job but more importantly their essential skill lies in getting other people to do their jobs with maximum efficiency and productivity; while instilling a sense of purpose and well-being onto their subordinates. The supervisor would only need to learn the technical aspects of their new job. (This can be accomplished through a Vo Tech School, Trade school, college or OJT (On the Job Training).
A tank mechanic would find few civilian jobs that require tank maintenance but many industries rely on machinery and automation where "mechanically minded" people are adept in repairing and maintaining machinery. Companies and local governments that purchase heavy equipment for snow removal; construction etc. would always have a need to hire people with mechanical skills.
These are TRANSFERRABLE SKILLS and you never lose them.
