The WINNING Resume

11. Dress appropriately for the position you seek.

12. Don't apply for a job like everyone else. Interviewers look for creativity. Stand out from the crowd; be different and show your uniqueness. [The biggest complaint that recruiters make is: "that job applicants all apply in the same way". The effect on the mind is that after interviewing hundreds of job applicants this "sameness" tends to numb the mind and you will end up boring the interviewer. Remember that boredom is stress; be creative].

13. Always send a hand written thank you note immediately after the interview. Never underestimate the power of gratitude. Sending a thank you note will refresh the interviewer's memory and it will give you another opportunity to emphasize your strengths and what you are offering the employer.

14. Make a follow up phone call one to two weeks after the interview, if you have not heard back from the employer.

15. Anticipate and prepare for a second interview. Treat every question asked as a NEW question. The employer may be testing you for consistent answers.

16. Some job applicants may wish to do a "mock" interview. If you want to role play, be certain to role play in various settings with different people conducting the interview. This broad simulation can provide you with valuable feedback as it will cover a wide spectrum of settings coming as close as possible to a real interview.

17. You must really WANT THE JOB. In most cases, the person who gets hired is the person who wants the job the most. ***

18. During the interview, you must continually project CONFIDENCE and PROFESSIONALISM. Make this a high priority goal. Confidence is crucial when you lack direct job experience.

19. The interview is a TWO WAY street. The employer is "sizing" you up to see if you can "fit" into their organization. Engage in a conversation and build rapport as opposed to being a part of a  rigid question and answer session. Make an effort to understand the employer's needs  as this will make you more engaging.

20. People hire whom they like. This is human nature. If you sense no connection with the interviewer and you feel that you are not liked; move on to the next interview until a positive connection "clicks". You will be a lot happier as well as being more productive.
