Your resume may never be seen by human eyes, if it's first screened out by an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) such as RESUMATE, PEOPLE CLICK or
SENDOUTS.
It's crucial to the hiring process that you use a strong profile/keyword section at the top of your resume.
If your resume survives the ATS process, the person who has the power to hire will be looking for reasons to keep reading; reasons to consider you for
the current opening and reasons to stop reading and move on to the next resume.
Every line you write on your resume must answer the following question: Why should I interview this candidate?

ATS Facts
ATS or Applicant Tracking System is computer software that screens out unqualified job applicants. As any computer programmer will tell you, computers
are essentially "dumb". ATS relies on "Boolean " logic, computer language and computer code. ATS does not "think" like a real person. It does not recognize a poor job applicant and neither can ATS
distinguish an outstanding candidate and set it apart from the crowd of job applicants.
What should a job applicant do ? Learn to master the ATS game.
1. Choose simple fonts such as: CALIBRI, CAMBRIA, TAHOMA, ARIAL, NEW COURIER and VERDANA with a
point size ranging from 11 to 13. Avoid Serif Fonts such as TIMES NEW ROMAN which can confuse the ATS in producing misinformation and negative data. Serif fonts border on being calligraphy.
"Feed" the ATS simple fonts. Decorative fonts do not survive ATS screening. Keep it simple and get hired!
2. Send Resumes and Cover Letters as WORD documents .doc or .docx instead of PDF. Reason: ATS searches for
specific "fields" and "keywords". PDF formatted documents can "confuse" the ATS to improperly reading the data. PDF is useful to ensure that no formatting is lost. If you are uncertain of sending
WORD documents, you can also send documents in a ZIP folder to prevent loss of content.
3. Carefully review any job posting to understand relevant keywords and phrases for your resume and place it in context with other content you may wish
to communicate to the hiring manager.
4. Avoid using MS word text boxes as ATS cannot read text boxes.
5. Do not start sentences with dates of hire as this will only confuse ATS to improperly read
the data.
6. Pay close attention to acronyms and abbreviations and use of the slash "/" mark. It's best to write the FULL version of the word plus the
abbreviation or acronym. ATS may not recognize Manager/Developer as two keyword matches.
